Teeth Whitening
Issaquah, WA

Your smile is often the first thing that people notice about you. When you smile, your teeth are front and center. The appearance of your teeth plays a crucial role in the appearance of your smile and can have a major impact on the impressions you make. If your teeth are dull and discolored, the quality of your smile suffers. At Lake Sammamish Family Dentistry, we can help to give you back your brilliant white smile with teeth whitening services.

What Is Teeth Whitening?

Discoloration can be caused by some different issues, including certain types of foods and beverages, tobacco products, certain types of medications, and even age. The outermost layer of your teeth is hard and heavily mineralized. Over time, however, small microfractures naturally begin to form on the surfaces of your teeth, making it easier for them to catch and hold stains, pigments, and other debris. All of these issues dull the natural brightness of your teeth. Teeth whitening is a treatment that is designed to eliminate these stains, thereby restoring the bright white brilliance to your teeth and greatly improving the quality of your smile.

Why Not Just Use OTC Products?

You may have seen numerous different whitening products readily available at the store or pharmacy. Products such as strips, gels, toothpaste, and pens all promise to provide you with incredible results in a very short period. While they are advertised at an affordable price point, these products all contain very low levels of bleaching agents. If you have only minor surface stains, they may be effective, but they are rarely able to help you achieve your desired results. It can take multiple treatments, which add up in cost, to see even a minor change in the color of your teeth.

Types of Teeth Whitening

There are two ways in which teeth can be whitened, in our office or your home. In-office whitening, called chairside whitening, only requires one visit and about an hour of your time. First, your teeth are cleaned. Next, a lip retractor is placed in your mouth to keep it open, and a protective gel is applied to your gums. We then apply the whitening gel to your teeth and shine a light over your mouth. The active ingredient breaks down to form small oxygen bubbles that enter into the enamel and the dentin, eliminating stains. The light is used to enhance the results. When the hour is up, your teeth are immediately noticeably whiter. If you prefer to whiten your teeth at home, we can provide you with take-home trays. These trays are custom made from impressions of your mouth and are designed to hold the gel against your teeth. You are provided with the trays, the whitening gel, and instructions for use. The trays are meant to be worn for several hours twice a day or overnight while you are sleeping. The number of days you need to wear them will vary based on your teeth and your goals. Typically, treatment lasts one to two weeks, with results beginning to show in just under a week.

Is Whitening Permanent?

Whitening can restore brilliance to your smile, but the same factors that caused your discoloration in the first place can cause it again. There are ways that you can keep your smile bright longer though.
•  Limit staining foods and beverages.
•  Drink plenty of water.
•  Quit smoking.
•  Brush and floss daily.
•  Have periodic touchups done.

If dull, discolored teeth are causing you to hide your smile behind your hand, or keeping you from smiling at all, whitening can help. Call Lake Sammamish Family Dentistry today at (425) 270-1075 to learn more!
